Der brutale Terrorist Rahmat (Iko Uwais) will sich in einer libyschen Chemie-Waffenfabrik von Gaddafi Zünder für eine Atombombe unter den Nagel reißen. Der CIA-Agent Marsh (Andy Garcia) schick daraufhin die bis an die Zähne bewaffneten Expendables von Barney Ross (Sylvester Stallone) los, um dem Übeltäter das Handwerk zu legen. Für Ross ist der Auftrag persönlich motiviert, da Rahmats Auftraggeber das Phantom Ozelot sein soll, welches der Söldner-Boss schon seit über zwei Jahrzehnten jagt. Doch der Einsatz in Libyen endet in einer Katastrophe. Rahmat kann nicht nur mit den Zündern entkommen, auch Lee Christmas (Jason Statham) fliegt aus dem Team, weil er für das Scheitern der Mission verantwortlich gemacht wird. Während die Expendables nun auf junges Blut bauen, ausgerechnet unter der Leitung von Christmas' Freundin Gina (Megan Fox), macht sich die britische Kampfmaschine auf eigene Faust auf den Weg, den Dritten Weltkrieg zu verhindern.
